One of the
favorite places on this trip is Mount Vernon. It is always
a pleasure to share it with each class. And today it did
not rain! It always rains when we are at Mount Vernon;
instead, the weather was beautiful! It was also the first
time we have seen the Education Center and Museum, which was
not open last year. What a wonderful job they have done on
these two experiences. The Education Center is interactive
and includes a movie on the American Revolution. In the
theater the chairs shook as cannons were firing. There was
even snow from the ceiling that fell on our heads as it did
on George Washington’s as he crossed the Delaware River. I
asked if anyone wanted to go into the museum. Four came
with me; however, it was so wonderful they all had to go in
to take a look. They really enjoyed it. We ate lunch at
the Mount Vernon Inn where the kids behaved so beautifully
that everyone serving said they were the best school they
had ever served.
Next we had
a driving tour through Alexandria where Curt pointed out
many historic buildings. This is a beautiful town.
We had a
tour through the Capitol which we set up with Diane
Feinstein’s office. We rode the Senate subway between her
offices and the Capitol. Everyone saw the rotunda, old
Supreme Court, and the Senate where two senators were
discussing the practice of unions using union dues to pay
for political agendas.
Samantha
Harper’s grandfather and Jamie’s sister ate dinner with us,
and then she joined us on our ghost tour of Alexandria.
This is a great way to end a great day!
The kids
have been absolutely wonderful – full of energy, polite to
people, and excited about most everything. Thanks for
letting us have them for a week.
It’s late.
We are very tired. Good-night.

Travis, JoAnn, and David
