What were you doing at 2:15am?  Were you thinking about us?  At that time we were just waking up ready for a long, action-packed day.

After a good breakfast in the hotel, we had a walking tour of the University of Virginia that started before sunrise!  Everyone seemed interested in the building that Thomas Jefferson designed and of which he was so proud.  We will be starting a unit on Edgar Allan Poe, so it was of interest to all that he had lived there.  We were able to see what his room might have looked liked.

Next, we were off to the top of Thomas Jefferson’s mountain to tour Monticello.  This is a favorite spot for the students with its beautiful vistas, as well as all of Mr. Jefferson’s spectacular inventions.  The guides were amazed at all of the questions the students could answer correctly.

Michie‘s   Tavern was our lunch stop.  Built in 1789, it serves wonderful fried chicken, stewed tomatoes, coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy, beets, green beans, peach cobbler, and biscuits or cornbread.  Was you lunch that good?

The two-hour drive from Monticello to Jamestown was made more enjoyable (?) listening to the kids sing karaoke. We started our Jamestown visit at the glassblowers.  Several of the kids were really fascinated and want to learn how to blow glass.  Next we visited the Jamestown Settlement where we saw the Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that the settlers from the Virginia Company of London used, as well as a replica of the Jamestown fort.  Of special interest was the firing of a cannon off the dock into the James River.  This produces a very large noise!

And then, it was time to eat again.  This time at Sal’s Italian restaurant where we were met by Maya Clark, JoAnn’s daughter and Sarah Watt, Gingie’s daughter.  This was such a pleasure for all of us to see them.  Sarah still remembers her trip to DC and Curt was her driver.

We checked in to our hotel before going to Williamsburg for a night tour, called the Lanthorn Tour.  Carrying a lantern, we were able to see more closely what daily life was like in Williamsburg.

We are now back at the hotel.  Lights Out is being enforced.  We are very tired.  How long have we  been gone.
