Day
Seven's Daily Update is ready!
Each
year brings a unique set of challenges to traveling with 46
people. This year was no different. Well, maybe a little
different. As a group, our 8th grade class of 2007
is an experienced bunch having traveled with family and friends
around the country and across the globe. Their familiarity with
travel paid great dividends, as you can see from the photos and
video throughout the week. Our students were confident and
confronted each step in stride. This is a testament to
themselves, their families and the chaperones they traveled
with. Let’s take a look behind the scenes.
Travis
was a tremendous asset to our trip. He connected with our
students right away and it is clear from many of the photos you
have seen that he formed a special bond with these young
people. Each evening, Travis edited video for our website and
created movies that were both profound and reflective. It was
truly a pleasure working with him. Travis will be working with
our students as they create their own video to present to
WorldStides and he will be providing a high resolution copy of
the website video on DVD for each of you.
It was great having Mrs. Brain along with
us. As you saw on the web, Mrs. Brain enjoyed traveling with
our students. She made sure we were awake each morning and
ready to start our day and I personally enjoyed her company and
easy going manner. Thank you, Mrs. Brain!
Mrs. Holman kept us all healthy and got us
into bed on time each evening. She shared Kleenex and anything
else we needed! She helped Mrs. McDaniel with our daily updates
and helped me put together our group photos. She is fun to
travel with and I know our students enjoyed having her along as
much as I did.

Mrs. McDaniel never gave up. In spite of
the obstacles thrown at us last Sunday, she persevered and got
our trip underway without really missing a beat. Traveling
across three time zones and getting us in and out of our hotels
seemed easy. She paid our bills, managed our meals, wrote our
daily updates and directed our study in Williamsburg,
Gettysburg, Jamestown, and Washington, D.C. Thank you, Mrs.
McDaniel, for a tremendous effort.
Participating
in field study with these young people on such an unforgettable
adventure was a great experience. Making connections in the
math classroom with colonial history was a joy and watching our
students encounter what we analyzed mathematically in the
classroom was fantastic. I enjoyed sharing my photography with
you each
evening and communicating through our web site. Thanks also to
Mr. Adams who worked with me for several weeks preparing the
"Where Are We" feature using Amateur Radio. We will offer
each of you a collection of hundreds of digital images from the
trip on CD-ROM along with our web video on DVD.
We know our students understand Colonial
life now and they saw that the establishment of constitutional
government was not easy. These 8th graders became players in
the dramatic history of our country and we watched them connect
with the world around them. We are proud of each and every one
of them.
Thank you,
David.
