Wet, wetter,
wettest!
Here is
day three's video
A great day in Williamsburg
in spite of the driving rain. The temperature was warm so it
felt very humid, but not cold. We had two Williamsburg guides
who took us on a three hour tour. At the Capitol Building,
Lauren Donnelly was charged with pig stealing. She was found
guilty and chose to be branded rather than hanged. We also
listened to three colonials in the House of Burgesses tell the
views on a potential separation from England.
These three important parts
were played by Charles, Reed, and Ishani. All of the students
were put in jail to better understand what it was like. To give
everyone some exercise, half of the group played ball and trap
while the others played sticks and hoops. After visiting several
of the trade shops, a guide at the Magazine explained the
difference between colonial militia and the regular British
army. Ask about the backpacks. Our guides dropped us off at
the Governor’s Palace so we could see how the other half lived.
The students were impressed by the exceptional collection of
guns and swords.
We had a typical colonial
lunch at the King’s Arms Tavern where everyone enjoyed the
homemade ice cream for dessert. Our server complimented our
students’ behavior as being the best group in her ten years
working at the tavern.
A new exhibit at
Williamsburg is the Revolutionary City. This looked like a
great addition to the program; however, in the rain, not so
great. We slowly walked the length of the Duke of Gloucester
Street , looking in shops until we reached Merchants Square.
After a visit to the Wythe Candy Store for a limited purchase,
we were more than ready to leave with Curt. He has a
spectacular way of having us leave – lined up and singing
“Yankee Doodle Dandy” at the top of our lungs.
Curt’s wife and three
daughters meet us each year for dinner as we travel to
Washington, D.C. It has been such a pleasure to watch these
three girls over the years. They are so cute.
We are now asleep in our
hotel in Alexandria.
