One-Very-Long
Day Two:
First of all, thank you for
your support and trust in us that we were making the best
decisions for your kids. The process was long and complicated,
but the result has been great. After the long, drawn out ordeal
of flying here, we only missed a short visit to the University
of Virginia.
We arrived at the hotel,
where we had planned to stay, just in time for breakfast. The
hotel let us use some rooms for quick showers and a change of
clothes. What a relief! The day has been beautiful – clear,
crisp with occasional color in the trees. The students loved
Monticello. Many said that they thought it was one of the most
beautiful places they have seen. We then went to Michie’s
Tavern for a typical Southern tavern meal.
The students seemed to truly
enjoy the glasshouse at Jamestown. Nearby, they also had fun
skipping rocks and shells on the James River. We then visited
the Jamestown Settlement, which is readying itself for the 400th
anniversary of the first permanent English settlement. The
Powhatan Indian village, the ships of the Virginia Company, and
the replica of the fort all had activities for the students.
After dinner at Sal’s
Italian Restaurant, where we ate with one of our Barnhart alums,
Brett Molenar, and his family, we checked into our hotel. Then
we were off to our evening program, Dueling Storytellers, where
most of the kids fell asleep. The storytellers were very
understanding and sent us on our way. We are all exhausted, but
know that tomorrow we will be refreshed after a good night’s
sleep and ready to go.
